La Peña

The Peña is a community gathering centered around music, theater, food, and friendship.  We have many community groups that participate on a regular basis including Son Mudanza, Dignidad Sin Fronteras and Sonidos Suaves.  Other individuals from the community also take the stage to share their talents.  The stage is always open to those who want to share in any way.

We try to hold the Peña about once a month.  Hopefully we will get onto a more regular schedule soon.  If you would like to be added to the peña listserve contact Kent at kent@chdc.us   videos 122

The peña tradition started in Latin America in the early sixties. The main idea, developed especially by Chilean composer and singer Violeta Parra, was to have a gathering place where artists of all disciplines could share a space. The mission of the peña was to provide good food, music and an overall aesthetic response to an institutional culture that did not provide the space for other creative forms to exist. Peñas in Chile became a major backbone of the cultural program during Salvador Allende’s government from 1970 to 1973. It was here where artists-poets, musicians, painters, cooks – gathered to preserve cultural forms and to create new ones.* *information from La Peña Cultral Center in Berkeley, CA
